The newly constituted Seventh Pay Commission has started work to restructure the pay structure of government employees in the state. The commission has written to the state Finance Secretary seeking detailed information regarding the salaries, allowances, posts, services and cadres of employees of various government departments.

Information regarding salaries and allowances of not only government department employees but also teachers, education workers, panchayats, municipalities and various other agencies of the state government that bear the financial responsibility has been sought. This information will have to be submitted by the officers in charge of the concerned department in a specific format on the online portal designated by the commission.

However, representatives of the workers' organizations have raised questions as there is no specific deadline for submitting the information. Swapan Mandal, general secretary of the Bengali Teachers and Education Workers' Association, said that if a deadline is not set, various departments may deliberately delay sending the information, which may also affect the work of the commission.

It is worth noting that the state government, headed by former bureaucrat Naveen Prakash, constituted the Seventh Pay Commission in July last year. The commission's terms of reference stated that a family of five members would be taken as the basis for determining the minimum pay of government employees. It has also proposed to consider the daily nutritional requirement of 3,490 calories as a criterion for determining the minimum pay, which is higher than the previous standard of 2,700 calories.

The government has stated that the Seventh Pay Commission will review and make recommendations on not only salary increases but also the overall structure of government jobs, including allowances, promotions, retirement benefits, and working conditions.
