Whenever Kali Puja arrives, Bengalis fondly remember the legendary voice of Pannalal Bhattacharya. Even during the sacred occasion of Phalaharini Kali Puja, the celebrations feel incomplete without his soul-stirring Shyama Sangeet dedicated to the Divine Mother.

Pannalal Bhattacharya passed away in 1966, yet decades later, his association with Shyama Sangeet remains as profound as ever. To this day, Bengalis cannot imagine the worship of Goddess Kali without the devotional songs rendered in his unforgettable voice.
Every Kali Puja season, his music continues to touch countless hearts and evoke deep spiritual emotions.

Pannalal Bhattacharya also shared a remarkable spiritual connection with Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, whose legacy is deeply associated with Phalaharini Kali Puja. Pannalal’s father, Surendranath Bhattacharya, belonged to a family deeply rooted in spiritual traditions. His uncle was the renowned yogi Bhaduri Mahashaya, also known as Paramahansa Maharshi Nagendranath. The devotional compositions and melodies created by Maharshi Nagendranath had once deeply impressed Sri Ramakrishna himself.

The spiritual influence of Sri Ramakrishna continued to shape Pannalal Bhattacharya’s life until his final days. His Shyama Sangeet was not merely a form of musical expression; it was a reflection of profound devotion and spiritual practice.

In this context, Dr. Subhadip Bandyopadhyay, who carries the family’s hereditary legacy through his maternal line, stated: “Pannalal Bhattacharya’s Shyama Sangeet was far more than music; it was the outcome of a deeply spiritual life. The family carried a rich heritage of Tantric and Vaishnav spiritual traditions, along with the blessings of Sri Ramakrishna. That is why both Dhananjay Bhattacharya and Pannalal Bhattacharya continue to shine so brightly in the world of Shyama Sangeet.”

Even today, as the chants and hymns of Kali Puja fill the air, the immortal voice of Pannalal Bhattacharya continues to resonate across Bengali households, preserving a sacred musical tradition that transcends generations.
