Amid the ceaseless rhythm and bustle of Kolkata, Sri Sri Nagendra Math and Nagendra Mission, situated on Rammohan Roy Road, stands as a timeless beacon of spiritual heritage. For more than a century, this sacred institution has preserved and nurtured a living tradition of Yoga, Bhakti, and Sanatana Dharma, continuing to inspire seekers from across India and beyond.
This revered spiritual centre was the final abode and tapasya-sthali of the accomplished yogi and saint, Bhaduri Mahasaya, also known as Paramahansa Maharshi Nagendranath Bhaduri. History records that in 1891, with the noble vision of promoting and disseminating Sanatana Dharma, Maharshi Nagendranath founded the Sanatana Dharma Pracharini Sabha. In its early years, spiritual gatherings were conducted wherever the Maharshi happened to reside. At the earnest request of his disciples and devotees, a permanent residence was eventually established in Kolkata’s Garpar area on Rammohan Roy Road. The housewarming ceremony was solemnly observed on the auspicious occasion of Dol Purnima in 1916.
On 2 November 1926, Bhaduri Mahasaya attained Mahasamadhi, marking the culmination of his sacred earthly spiritual journey. Following the Bhaduri Mahasaya’s Mahasamadhi, his spiritual son and foremost disciple, Dhyanprakash Brahmachari, consecrated the sacred urn containing his Guru’s holy relics by installing the sacred seat of Guru Brahman above it. Under his initiative, a Samadhi Temple was subsequently constructed over the relics, transforming the site into a revered place of pilgrimage and spiritual contemplation.
Visitors entering the Math are immediately greeted by the serene Samadhi Temple of Maharshi Nagendranath and his sacred image. Within the same sanctum is enshrined Lord Shiva in the form of a Shivalinga. Another shrine is dedicated to Goddess Kali, while an adjoining chamber contains the images of Dhyanprakash Brahmachari and his spiritual successor, Bhaktiprakash Brahmachari. The upper floor houses the Maharshi’s meditation chamber, where many of his personal belongings and cherished relics have been carefully preserved. For devotees and visitors alike, these sacred objects serve as enduring symbols of a profound spiritual legacy.
Beyond being a place of worship, Sri Sri Nagendra Math and Nagendra Mission continues to play a significant role in scriptural study, spiritual education, and cultural enrichment. Regular recitations of the Srimad Bhagavatam, congregational prayers, Harinama Sankirtana, and devotional renditions from Maharshi Nagendranath’s Paramartha Sangeetabali form an integral part of the institution’s daily activities.
Daily worship is offered to Maharshi Nagendranath, Dhyanprakash Brahmachari, and Bhaktiprakash Brahmachari. Major religious observances include Maha Shivaratri, Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Kali Puja, Rama Navami, Saraswati Puja, and Annapurna Puja. Among the most celebrated events is the grand Annakuta Festival, held annually during Annapurna Puja, drawing devotees from various parts of the country.
The institution has also made notable contributions to the propagation of spiritual knowledge and religious literature. Under the auspices of the Sanatana Dharma Pracharini Sabha, Sri Sri Nagendra Math and Nagendra Mission, numerous valuable works have been published. Among the most distinguished are Sri Sri Nagendra Upadeshamrita, Pratigya Shataka, Upadesha Shataka, and Paramartha Sangeetabali. Literary contributions by Dhyanprakash Brahmachari, Bhaktiprakash Brahmachari, and other scholars have further enriched this remarkable tradition.
Dr. Subhadip Bandyopadhyay, a descendant of Bhaduri Mahasaya’s lineage and a devoted scholar of his spiritual life and teachings, remarked that Bhaduri Mahasaya—known worldwide as “The Levitating Saint” through the celebrated autobiography of Paramahansa Yogananda—continues to draw devotees, spiritual seekers, and admirers from around the world to the sacred site associated with the closing years of his earthly sojourn. He emphasized that Maharshi Nagendranath’s contribution to the propagation of Sanatana Dharma remains immeasurable and enduring.
He further noted that through the collective efforts of Dr. Rabindranath Kar, Debashish Bose, Sanjay Bhattacharya, and many other dedicated devotees, this spiritual landmark in Kolkata continues to radiate the light of spiritual wisdom and divine inspiration.
In an age increasingly defined by material pursuits and rapid change, Sri Sri Nagendra Math and Nagendra Mission remains a sanctuary of inner awakening and timeless values. Standing quietly yet resolutely amidst the modern cityscape, this sacred institution continues to carry forward an undying flame of Yoga, Bhakti, and Sanatana Dharma—illuminating the path for generations of seekers and preserving a priceless chapter of India’s spiritual heritage.
