Young engineer returned to celebrate New Year crushed to death with parents on NH
An electrical department employee of Durgapur Steel Plant, his wife and his software engineer son were crushed to death in a tragic road mishap on the NH-19 in the upscale of Burdwan town this afternoon.
The family hailed from City Centre, Durgapur and were in a hurry to reach the Dumdum airport in Kolkata as the son was scheduled to catch his flight to Mumbai to attend his job assignments. They were denied ticket in Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in Andal here as the entire seats were exhausted.
The software engineer son Shahnawaz posted in Pune, Maharashtra, according to the family sources, had come on a two days leave to take part in New Year celebrations with the family.
Their speeding family car barged into the back of a gas tanker at Jyotram location where the tanker gave a sudden halt and the driver of the car losing control to avert rimmed into the tanker heavily. The entire three of the family died on the spot, the police said. The driver Saheb Munshi though survived but suffered grave wounds. He was shifted to the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.
Sheikh Mohammed Murshed (57) was an employee with the Steel Authority of India's Durgapur Steel Plant. His son was a software engineer with a private company in Pune, Maharashtra. They were residents of SAIL Cooperative locality in City Centre, Durgapur town.
Murshed and his wife Rozina were accompanying their son to NSC Bose Airport as his flight to Mumbai was scheduled in the evening hours, said Ranjan Tewari, the neighbour of the ill fated family. Murshed's 80 year old mother Nasima also was a DSP employee. She broke down on receiving the information. She only said: "My husband was a DSP employee. I lost him 30 years ago. Now I lost my son, grandson and his mother. I am shattered." The family hailed from Jangipur, Murshidabad and settled in Durgapur 60 years ago.
