Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) incredible record, 400 electric railway engines in just 148 working days

Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), as it is known for the past 75 years, the leading railway locomotive manufacturer of the world, has been the flagship production unit of Indian Railways. CLW has remained pioneer in turning out electric locomotives to international standards, providing safe and comfortable journey for the railway passengers. CLW, thus plays a key role in making Indian Railway’s self reliance in the field of electric locomotive production, becoming a prime mover to the Indian economy.
 
It has manufactured more than 12998 locomotives of various class since its inception which comprises, 2351 nos. of steam locomotives (1950-1968), 842 diesel locomotives (1968-1993) and 9805 electric locomotives of different types from 1961. About 90% of all electric locomotive ever used by IR have come from assembly lines of CLW.
 
In a historical achievement, CLW produced 700 locomotives by March 30,2025, settings a new all-time record just a day before the close of the financial year 2024-25.
Again breaking its own record, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) by manufacturing 400 electric railway engines in just 148 working days. This is the first time the factory has set such an incredible record since its establishment. This is the first time since the factory was established that such an incredible record has been set. However, out of these 400 engines, 100 engines were manufactured in the Dankuni division of CLW. "According to the public relations department of Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), 400 engines have been produced in the current fiscal year, 45 days earlier than the previous fiscal year. The 400th engine officially began its journey on September 2025. It is to be noted that the Indian Railway Board has given CLW a target of producing 777 engines in the current financial year. If this production trend continues, CLW, believes that it will be possible to produce more engines than the target from the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW)." General Manager Vijay Kumar congratulated Team of CLW for this incredible achievement.
