The Centre has extended the tenure of West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) Siddhnath Gupta by another six months. The Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet approved the proposal from the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday. An official order stated that, in the public interest, the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules have been relaxed to allow him to remain in office for six months beyond October 31.
The Election Commission appointed Siddhinath Gupta, a 1992-batch IPS officer, as the state's DG and IGP in March of this year. Amidst the election atmosphere, he was handed the responsibility of the state police after the then-DG, Piyush Pandey, was removed from the post. Piyush Pandey had been serving as the acting DG following the retirement of Rajeev Kumar.
Siddhinath Gupta's tenure had previously been extended by six months in April of this year. Before that extended term could expire, the Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet approved a further six-month extension of his service. Consequently, Siddhinath Gupta will remain in the top post of the state police until the end of April next year.
