Manoj Singh, Durgapur:-  The solution to the licensing and leasing quarter problem given to retired steel workers from Durgapur Steel Plant and Durgapur Alloys Steel Plant for more than two decades is now just a matter of time. On May 4, the Trinamool Congress-ruled government was overthrown in the state and the Bharatiya Janata Party government was formed. During the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election campaign, Durgapur East constituency candidate Chandrashekhar Banerjee and West constituency candidate Laxman Chandra Gharui had promised at a press conference at the BJP's local office that they would solve the problem of the Durgapur Steel Plant and Durgapur Alloys Steel Plant within 100 days of the government's rule. However, a few days ago, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to Asansol for an election campaign to solve this problem, the two candidates from Durgapur East and West constituencies joined hands and prayed to the Prime Minister for a fair solution to the problems of these retired elderly people. It was decided that day that the permanent housing problem of former steel workers would be resolved as soon as the Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power in the state.

As soon as the Bharatiya Janata Party government was formed in the state, the two MLAs of Durgapur East and West, in coordination with the ministers and bureaucrats of the double engine government in the state and the center, developed this issue. Durgapur East MLA Chandrashekhar Banerjee, in a private interview with the state's top brass a few days ago, requested for a quick solution to the housing issue of the retired workers of Durgapur Steel Plant. While the Durgapur East MLA was discussing this issue with the state's top brass. At that time, the MLA of the Durgapur West , Laxman Chandra Gharui, went to the Honorable Minister of State for Steel of the Central Government in his office in New Delhi and obtained a promise to quickly solve the housing problem of the retired steel workers. In the Industrial Zone One of the few significant works that have been done in the industrial zone since the Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power in Durgapur is the solution to the housing problem of the retired steel workers.

On Wednesday, August 19, a joint protest program was held by about eight organizations of steel township under the initiative of Durgapur Ispat Nagari Nagorik Manch. Several processions from different parts of steel township came together and took the form of a grand procession. The protest program was held with multiple demands including quater license, adequate drinking water, electricity bill and electricity connection, and road renovation. This program was taken to demand a solution to multiple problems of the residents of steel township for a long time. On this day, members of the Nagorik Manch demonstrated in front of the city administrative TA building under the Durgapur Ispat Plant. The Nagorik Manch claimed, "The common people living in steel township are facing various problems. Especially, they have multiple demands such as quater license problems, lack of adequate drinking water, complications related to water and electricity bills, electricity connection, and repair of roads that have been in poor condition for a long time. A memorandum was also submitted to the authorities demanding a speedy solution to these problems."

Durgapur East MLA Chandrashekhar Banerjee was present at this protest program. He raised various problems of the citizens to the officials of Durgapur Steel Plant and discussed them in detail. On this day, MLA Chandrashekhar Banerjee said, "There are many demands. We have raised those demands with the authorities. The officials have assured that arrangements will be made to resolve the problems. We are hopeful that the authorities will look into the issues and resolve the problems quickly."

On the other hand, it is learnt from a source that some ultra-left-minded former steel workers' organization has already started fishing in troubled waters. It is learnt that as soon as Bharatiya Janata Party's Durgapur West MLA Laxman Chandra Gharui met the Minister of State for Steel in Delhi, the Steel Ministry gave some specific orders to the higher authorities of Durgapur Steel Plant. A section of those ultra-left-minded retired steel workers, having come to know about this, on the 12th august, sent a deputation to the high official of the city administration TA building of Durgapur Steel Plant.

A former steel worker who participated in today's protest program, (who did not want to be named), said angrily, "The people who have been doing dirty politics with retired steel workers for the past twenty years are now using this success of the double engine government to fan their wings. All retired steel workers living in Durgapur industrial area should identify these opportunists and fraudsters and request them not to get trap any retired steel worker in their trap." He also said, "With the sincere efforts of the two BJP MLAs from the East and West of Durgapur Industrial Area, the retired steel workers will get their fair rights to their residence. They believe that the retired steel workers of Durgapur Steel Plant will be the first in West Bengal to get the benefits of the double engine government very soon."
