Saswati Basu (name changed) still remembers the rainy evening two years ago at a crowded Dankuni station that she calls "the great platform sprint." With two heavy bags and no Coach Indication Board to guide her, she stood at the wrong end of the platform. When her train pulled in, she had to dash 200 meters through a sea of people just to reach her coach before the whistle blew. "I was breathless, frustrated, and almost missed my train," she recalls. Fast forward to today, and Saswati’s experience is unrecognizable. Standing calmly under a bright digital display that tells her exactly where her coach will stop, she says, "It’s like the station is finally talking to me. No more guessing, no more running."
Saswati’s improved journey is part of a massive tech-driven makeover by Eastern Railway. Over the last year, the railway has rolled out a wave of digital tools designed to put real-time information right where passengers need it. One of the biggest upgrades involves the electronic signs we all rely on; this year, 27 stations—including hubs like Arambagh, Samudragarh, and Balagarh in Howrah; Dhulian Ganga in Malda; and Kalyani Ghoshpara in Sealdah—have been equipped with brand-new Train Indication Boards (TIBs). This is a huge leap from the 17 stations covered last year. For those who used to struggle like Saswati, new high-visibility Coach Indication Boards (CIBs) have been installed at Dhulian Ganga and Dankuni platforms, allowing passengers to locate their coaches with total precision.
The stations are also becoming much more vibrant and vocal. Passengers at Rampurhat or New Farakka will now see massive new Video Walls, while executive lounges and waiting halls at stations like Malda Town, Jamalpur, and Sultanganj now feature 31 sleek LED TVs to provide continuous travel updates and entertainment. Communication has also become crystal clear; 17 stations have been upgraded with Auto Announcement Systems this year—a significant jump from just 4 stations the previous year—ensuring that important updates are never missed due to muffled speakers.
Beyond the screens, Eastern Railway is blending high-tech precision with classic architectural style. They have installed GPS-synchronized clocks at 23 stations in the Sealdah Division, including smaller halt stations like Bhyabla and Khidirpur, to ensure station time is perfectly accurate. For a touch of elegance, nine stations including Panagarh, Sitarampur, and Siuri have received iconic Tower Clocks, which serve as both functional timepieces and local landmarks.
General Manager Shri Milind Deouskar shared that the goal is to bring a modern, tech-savvy environment to every passenger, ensuring even the smallest stations provide a convenient experience. Supporting this vision, Chief Public Relations Officer of Eastern Railway, Shri Shibram Majhi, stated that these infrastructure upgrades are a testament to the railway's dedication to simplifying travel, ensuring that every commuter enjoys a seamless, informative, and stress-free experience from the moment they step onto the platform.
